New iPhone Users Report Credit Card and PayPal Account Hacks after Jailbreaking Their Devices

Apple users have long been awaiting an app to jailbreak iPhones and iPads running iOS 9.3.3 and other recent versions of the operating system. Pangu, a well-trusted coding company from China, released a tool allowing users to quickly jailbreak their devices without connecting to a computer, but new reports indicate that people are seeing unauthorized credit card and PayPal transactions after using the Pangu tool.

Jailbreaking is a means by which users can remove manufacturer restrictions that limit them from downloading programs that aren’t available on Apple’s network. In order to be featured in the AppStore, apps must be put through a thorough review from Apple. Some developers choose not to go through that process and instead release their apps only to Android or other operating systems. Jailbreaking has been around as long as Apple has been making smartphones and tablets, but it has taken some time for the capability to come out for new model iPhones.

Many of the complaints are coming in through the jailbreak subreddit on Reddit.com. Members of the Pangu development team responded to posts there, asking users which version of their jailbreaking tool was used in connection with the hacking reports. Later, they concluded that payment account breaches are only connected to people using the English version of the tool, not the Chinese version.

As a precaution, monitor your payment accounts and social media accounts if you have recently used a tool to jailbreak your Apple device. Report any unauthorized transactions to your card issuer, PayPal, or the social network as soon as you notice them so the issue can be rectified.
